Our Mission
The Engineering Department provides a broad base of technical support and assistance for the various departments of the City as well as the citizens of Henderson. Our mission is to plan and direct public and private infrastructure improvements within the City and its utility service areas. We strive to ensure future capacity, economical maintenance, safety, and quality in our various programs, transportation as well as water and sewer utilities to help better serve the residents, property owners, and visitors of the City of Henderson. The Engineering Department is open Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. until 4:00 p.m. Some of the predominant functions are as follows:
Mapping & Records
Water and sewer mains, streets, other infrastructure, and other important maps and geographic data are maintained and updated on a continuous basis. Retention of as-built drawings, project files, inventory of water, sewer, streets, storm drainage systems, street lights, etc. Information is available upon request. Development Review & Engineering Inspections
Review of site plans for conformance with City Standards and regulations as they relate to storm drainage, stormwater management, water and sewer utilities, streets, Soil Erosion and Sedimentation Control, etc. Staff also inspects the construction of water and sewer mains and street construction to conform with City Standards and Policies.
Citizen/Resident Inquiries
Engineering performs studies for new water and sewer service applications, street light requests, transportation initiatives, property development, street resurfacing, right-of-ways, etc. For citizen/resident requests, please visit our Engineering Request Inquiries Page.
Erosion and Sedimentation Control Program
The City of Henderson administers an Erosion and Sedimentation Control program within the City Limits. This program operates under the Land Quality Section of the North Carolina Department of Environmental and Natural Resources (NCDENR). The City has local jurisdiction in administering the Sedimentation Pollution Control Act of 1973 and does so by the way of the Soil Erosion and Sedimentation Control Ordinance (City Ordinance Chapter 23A). MS4 Stormwater Program
The City of Henderson is divided into two river basins, the Tar-Pamlico River and the Roanoke River basins. In an effort to improve the water quality in both basins, the City of Henderson has implemented certain design requirements for new development and redevelopment sites to address both water quality and quantity for post-development stormwater runoff. Capital Improvements Plan (CIP)
Engineering provides project management to ensure that municipal projects are carried out to completion in a timely manner and within budget guidelines. These projects range from infrastructure improvements to new or renovations of current City buildings.
