Background Information
The City of Henderson is working to proactively comply with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s Lead and Copper Rule Revisions (LCRR). A federal requirement, the revised rule applies to all water systems in the nation and requires a complete inventory of service line materials, which the City successfully submitted to the North Carolina Department of Environmental Quality on Oct. 16.
The inventory includes non-lead service lines as well as those constructed with unknown materials. If you received a letter in the mail from us notifying you that your service line is unknown, you can self-identify the material by following the instructions below.
Getting Started
Instructions for Line Identification:
Collect the items needed to identify the service line material.
Locate your service line. The service line is typically located in the basement as shown in the graphic.
Using the key, coin, or other tool, lightly scratch your water service line as close to the wall as possible where it enters the home as shown in the graphic. Note the color.
Place a magnet on the pipe. Note if it does not stick.
Tap the pipe with a coin. Note the sound.
Using the table below, compare the results from the scratch/magnet test to determine the material of your service line.
Take one photo of the service line as it enters your home and one of the area where you performed the scratch test.
